Macquarie's housing loan book just grew 25.9% in 12 months
Macquarie added $38.2 billion to its housing loan book over the year to July 2026, accounting for almost a quarter of the increase across Australia's banking system.
Macquarie Bank is rapidly becoming a large force in Australian retail banking.
The latest Australian Prudential Regulation Authority Monthly Authorised Deposit-taking Institution Statistics show Macquarie held $185.9 billion of housing loans at the end of July 2026, up from $147.7 billion a year earlier. That is an increase of $38.2 billion, or 25.9%.
Across all authorised deposit-taking institutions, housing loans increased by $159.0 billion over the same period. Macquarie therefore accounted for 24.0% of the net increase in outstanding housing lending.
Its deposit growth is remarkably similar. Household deposits at Macquarie increased from $85.7 billion to $115.9 billion, a rise of $30.2 billion or 35.2%. That represented 24.3% of the $124.2 billion increase in household deposits across the system.
APRA defines housing lending as loans to resident households for owner-occupied or investment housing, while household deposits are deposits from resident households.
Macquarie's share of outstanding housing lending increased from 6.3% to 7.4% in just twelve months, while its share of household deposits rose from 5.2% to 6.6%.
Australia still has a Big Four banking system. But the latest numbers increasingly point to a substantial number five.
